Slice of scholarship breaks down barriers

A $10,000 scholarship will help Cameron Calkoen to help other young people with disabilities achieve their dreams.  The Murrays Bay resident who has cerebral palsy founded a mentor programme with Yes Disability for young people with disabilities.  Mr Calkoen has represented New Zealand in international track sporting events all around the world.

Student bloods his discovery

It was a simple enough problem.  How to convince the public to accept and eventually use plastic products made out of animal blood.  The solution was just as simple – take the colour and smell out of the blood.  Waikato University student Aaron Low did just that, and now the Fiji-born, Hamilton-raised 24-year-old plans to take his discovery to the world.  He is the 2011 AMP Regional Scholarship Programme winner and plans to present his work at international conferences.

Pro-cyclist dream in sights

The 2011 AMP Regional Scholarship Programme has been finalised with the announcement of the AMP Graeme Menzies & Associates recipient for 2011.  Following a very difficult judging process, Scott Creighton has been selected as the deserving recipient.  Eighteen year old Creighton has been acknowledged by Graeme Menzies & Associates in Matamata and AMP for doing outstanding things in his field.

Nine-year-old boy is Kiwi Karate Kid

Mr Miyagi, left, (Pat Morita), gives martial arts and life lessons to Karate Kid Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio).  Matthew O’Connor is New Zealand’s own Karate Kid.  At just nine, he’s the country’s youngest black belt in Shaolin Kenpo, mixing western boxing with Asian martial arts.

Major boost for rising stars

Two emerging Christchurch sportsmen have won scholarships worth up to $10,000.  Alex Fort and Jesse Bryant were last night selected from more than 100 applicants as recipients of this year’s AMP Amicus Group regional scholarships.  Past winners include Winter Paralympics gold medallist Adam Hall and former world shearing champion Paul Avery.

Medicine, athletics dreams a step nearer

Liam Walsh is $5000 closer to achieving his goals.  The John Paul College head boy was awarded this year’s Bay of Plenty AMP scholarship worth $5000 for services to the community as well as academic and sporting success.  Liam, 18, said he was excited when he found out he had won the top prize and he would be using the money to help towards the costs of achieving his goals.

Richmond pair score $5000 scholarships

After seeing off more than 60 aspiring entrants from Nelson and Marlborough, AMP regional scholarship winners Ryan Chisnall and Tom Filmer have set their sights on the world.  The Waimea teenagers were announced recipients of $5000 cheques from AMP Powerhouse Financial Services as winners of the company’s Do Your Thing! Scholarship project, and the pair are hoping the money can kickstart already promising sporting careers.

Their chosen sports could not be more different from each other, but the two young winners of an annual award last night are united by their passion and focus.  The Nelson pair received scholarships of $5000 to go towards their goals at the AMP Powerhouse Do Your Thing regional awards.  The scholarships are open to New Zealanders of any age who can demonstrate commitment in whatever they are passionate about.

AMP scholars announced

Three young Western Bay of Plenty people were presented with AMP scholarships at Rothbury Financial Services last night to help further current life goals.  Rotorua student and runner, 18-year-old Liam Walsh received $5000 to help further his sporting career while he studies medicine.  He’s the current New Zealand steeplechase champion and wanted ‘as much as possible’ from the AMP scholarship to fund his medical school studies and to assist with transport to overseas sporting fixtures.

Canine friends become fit fur life

Pet therapy has been lauded as a lifesaver for seriously injured animals, and now one of New Zealand’s few professionals of the practice is seeking the public’s help to take her vision further. Coast Rd resident Vicki Cordier is the owner of Active Paws, a pet rehabilitation centre based in Porirua, and the only one available in the lower North Island.

Fashion graduate Sara Butt is pinning her hopes on a $10,000 scholarship to help launch her fashion label, Charlie’s Girl.  Miss Butt, 27, has entered AMP finance company’s Do Your Thing! Yohann shows taekwondo skills

Nineteen-year-old Yohann Landkroon was back at his old high school last week, doing his thing. Landkroon joined instructor Ben Evans and his fellow students from the Hawke’s Bay International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) school at Havelock North High last Friday, to perform a half-hour demonstration.  Not only was the demonstration designed to showcase the skills of the young martial art practitioners, it was also to appeal to the school students to vote online for Landkroon to win the $10,000 people’s choice prize in the national AMP “Do Your Thing” Scholarship competition.

Ash’s career is taking off

An opening gig for Shihad in Wellington and an invitation to launch an album in the United States – doors are opening for Kapiti musician Ash Graham.  Ash, 16, opened for Kiwi rockers Shihad on May 28, when they visited Wellington High School, where he is a year 12 student.  “That was amazing, to be part of a full-on professional gig.  And they had heard my music, which was great.”

Don’t mess with diminutive dynamo Matthew O’Connor.  As one of New Zealand’s youngest shaolin kenpo black belts, the Browns Bay eight-year old knows how to defend himself.  Streaking ahead of his peers, Matthew achieved first degree black belt quicker than any other child that instructor Kevin Watts has worked with during 32 years in the sport.
